Santi's Story

Santi

My name is Nicole Sergeant and I am the clinic director for Niños Incapacitados. This is

the story of Santi. He was born a normal baby and around nine months of age he

contracted meningitis. His brain, muscles, speech and movements were all affected by

the illness. He never recovered and was wheelchair bound until his death just weeks

ago.

It was very hard for us as clinic volunteers to hear about Santi’s condition and we

helped him and his family as much as possible. We helped with therapies and lots of

medications to help with his convulsions. We arranged a donation of an electrical

hospital bed! Santi had surgeries at Shriners Hospital in Mexico City, but this did not

really help with the pain. Santi also had many, many hospitals emergencies.

We marveled at his parents who did all they could to make his life a little easier. We

received a heartfelt letter from his mother that we want to share with you. Please help

Hello,

my name is Fabiola and I am the mother of Santiago (Santi).

Our child required many things from Programa Pro Niños Incapacitados.

I remember the first day when I came to apply for the Program in September 2012.

Santi needed so much medical help that I was very nervous that I would be

refused.

We were received with a smile and questions about Santi. He was then accepted

into the program. It lifted a lot of weight from our shoulders because we could not

have paid all the medical bills for Santi.

With your help we felt so good knowing that Santi would get all the help he

needed. You were always by our side in Santi’s battle to stay alive. You were

comforting when needed and I could always count on you when the times were

hard. You did not mind the late phone calls because we had an emergency, and

you were always available to us.

He was very sick towards the end, and he wanted to go. At first, we did not want

to let him go. Seeing him suffering, we decided not to seek any more treatments

for him.

Now Santi is with the angels. His family and the family of Pro Niños Incapacitados

are happy that he has no pain, no more hospitals and no more tests as he is

resting in peace.

I would be lying if I would tell you that we are doing well, we miss him terribly.

One day we will understand God’s wishes.

We want more than to say thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for

all you have done for Santi and for being there with us along the way.

Thank you to your donors. Santi had such a better life because of you.

Our battle is finished and we leave your group with love and feeling very proud to
